The modern UK home is full of gadgets and gizmos, but have you ever considered how much energy you are wasting when you leave them on standby. When leaving your home unoccupied or going up to bed last thing at night there is always the temptation to leave appliances in the on position rather than go to the trouble of flicking the off switch or pulling the plug out.
Research conducted by the Energy Saving Trust and two government departments, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has found that families are wasting an average of between £50 and £86 per year. This works out at an average of 16% of an £530 annual electricity bill.
A total of 250 homes were monitored and it was discovered that as well as electronics and household goods such as fridges, freezers, ovens consuming a significant quantity of energy, even the average doorbell can cost you £6 per year in energy to run.
At a time when household energy bills are higher than ever before it really does make sense as a homeowner to take more notice of the amount of energy you utilise in the home.
So rather than being lazy, take the time to get up and go round your home, knocking everything off that does not need to be left on as you will find that it makes a substantial difference to the cost of your energy bills.
