San Francisco, CA- A three-point bucket by guard Danny Green with 9.3 seconds sealed an 84-82 victory for the San Antonio Spurs over the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 13 at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. It also made Green immensely popular with boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Mayweather, who currently holds the WBC welterweight and WBA light middleweight professional boxing titles, is known as something of a gambler. On Tuesday night, he won $275,000 thanks in part to Green’s successful three-point shot.
Mayweather watched the game in person at the Staples Center and was likely one of the few non-Spurs fans ecstatic about the outcome.
The bets, which were placed at a legitimate sports book, were certainly not Mayweather’s first foray into the casino. Back in September, the boxer lost $3 million on a single bet when he picked the Michigan Wolverines to defeat the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on September 2 in Arlington, Texas. The Tide rolled over the Wolverines 41-14.
The Spurs bet was probably a safer bet for Mayweather to make as the Spurs were 7-1 going into the game, while the Lakers were struggling, having only won once and just recently having fired head coach Mike Brown. Still with players like Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, and Steve Nash on the roster, Mayweather probably had a few anxious moments before Green hit his shot from the outside.
Mayweather boasted about his good fortune immediately after the game on Twitter, saying “Kobe Bryant is a living legend but I bet $275K on Spurs and Danny Green got me that green.”
Mayweather, who completed serving a two-month prison term for domestic assault in August, does not have an upcoming fight in the near future He may face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez early next year while fans eagerly await a rematch between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
