Samsung unveils gesture-control TVs

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Samsung, the Korean electronics maker that is successfully challenging Apple in smartphones, is unveiling a lineup of TVs that recognize an expanded range of gestures so users can swipe through menus in a way that revolutionizes the old remote control.

The user interface is touted to be faster and more intuitive. Samsung says it will be a feature of upcoming smart TVs. Certain Samsung flat-panel screens of the model year 2012 can be upgraded to the new interface with an add-on kit.

At the International CES show in Las Vegas, Samsung Electronics Co. also introduced an 85-inch “ultrahigh-definition” set, in line with rivals that are all rolling out screens with four times the pixels as the current HD.
