MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Roger Federer continued his bid for a fifth title at Melbourne Park, advancing to the third round of the Australian Open with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Russian veteran Nikolay Davydenko on Thursday night.

The second-ranked Federer, who has four Australian titles among his 17 Grand Slams, extended his career record to 18-2 against Davydenko.

The 31-year-old Swiss star will next play local hope Bernard Tomic, who beat German qualifier Daniel Brands 6-7 (4), 7-5, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (8) earlier Thursday and is last Australian player in either singles draw.

Federer won the Australian Open in 2004, ’06, ’07 and 2010.
