MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) — Europe is one point away from an improbable victory at the Ryder Cup, leading the Americans 13-12 after winning seven of the first nine matches.
Jim Furyk missed a 6-footer on 18 to hand Sergio Garcia a 1-up victory. As the ball slid by the hole on the right, Furyk leaned over, and put both hands on his knees, looking as if he was about to get sick. As the Europeans clustered around Garcia and fans sang “Ole! Ole! Ole!” Furyk stayed on the green, crouched over.
Europe began the day trailing 10-6, the same deficit the Americans erased at Brookline in 1999 in the biggest comeback in Ryder Cup history.
