LOS ANGELES (AP) — A top aide who according to documents helped Los Angeles Archdiocese Cardinal Roger Mahony to shield molester priests has issued a public apology.
Thomas J. Curry said Tuesday in a statement obtained by the Ventura County Star that he wants to “acknowledge and apologize” for decisions “that in retrospect appear inadequate or mistaken.”
He was an aide to Mahony in the 1980s who now serves as an auxiliary bishop for the Santa Barbara region.
Curry says he has since come to a clearer understanding of sex abuse and has instituted strict screening and reporting policies for those he supervises.
Thousands of pages from the internal disciplinary files of 14 priests made public Monday show Mahony, Curry and others maneuvered to shield molester priests and provide damage control for the church.
