The Turkish government announced plans to develop an economic stimulus package by 2011 to encourage the use of electric vehicles by the public.
Nihat Ergun, the Turkish minister of trade and industry, said lawmakers would work on legislation that would lower the taxes for electric vehicle purchases.
In addition, government officials could begin using electric vehicles as a way to showcase the versatility of the technology, the Anatolia News Agency reports.
The minister added Oyak Renault, the first Turkish automobile company to build an electric car, would start producing an electric vehicle line, the Fluence, for the public by the end of 2010.
Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan unveiled in early November the launch of its LEAF, its first all-electric vehicle designed for practical and affordable deployment.
Ergun said the country needed additional incentives to expand the coverage of charging stations for the electric vehicles, however.
