Jerry Brown of California is not the only former governor trying to get the old job back, with at least six ex-governors nationwide considering another run.
Brown, now state attorney general, has not formally declared he is a candidate for next year's race to succeed Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Los Angeles Times reported. But he has a campaign Web site and appears likely to win the Democratic nomination.
Republican Terry Branstad of Iowa and Democrats Roy Barnes of Georgia and John Kitzhaber of Oregon are all former governors and now gubernatorial candidates. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. of Maryland and Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin are apparently thinking about running.
Most of these ex-governors have had one big advantage -- governing in good times. Many states are now in a financial bind, especially California.
"It just makes me sick, thinking 'I know I could do this better,' " said Branstad, who had four terms under his belt when he stepped down a decade ago.
