About 9.4 million people tuned in to see the series finale of "Monk," the USA Network announced.

Starring Tony Shalhoub as a brilliant detective who suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, the show ran for eight seasons and aired its final new episode last Friday.

The New York Post said the finale earned a new viewership record for a basic cable drama series.

The previous record was set by TNT's "The Closer," which averaged 9.2 million viewers for its season finale in September 2007, the Post said.
