SALFIT, WEST BANK

Five Palestinian intelligence officers detained Friday by Israel in the West Bank have been released, Palestinian sources say.

Unnamed sources told Israel's Ynetnews.com that the five officers from the Palestinian General Intelligence Service detained early Friday near West Bank village of Salfit were released later in the day.

Salfit region intelligence commander Mohammad Abdel Hamid was reportedly among the detainees. Sources say the arrests were probably made as a result of Israeli suspicions that the General Intelligence Service members were intending to harm a man suspected of collaborating with Israel.

Ynetnews.com reported Israel demanded the Palestinian officers not hurt the alleged collaborator and that the agents release him from custody.

Israeli armed forces officials would not comment on the Palestinian reports, the Web site said.
