At least 23 people died when a ferry carrying 1,500 passengers capsized in southwestern Bangladesh, officials said Saturday.
Local police officials said the three-deck ferry was just about ready to dock Friday at its destination in the coastal town of Bhola, about 65 miles from Dhaka, when it capsized, the Press Trust of India reported, saying the passengers were being taken home from Dhaka to celebrate the Muslim Eid-ul-Azha festival.
PTI said ferry MV Como tipped and its rear portion at the Nazirpur ferry station sank into the sea.
Authorities indicated that of some the 23 bodies were recovered Friday night while other were removed Saturday. Saifur Hossain, chief of police in Bhola district, told the state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua that the rescuers had recovered more than 20 bodies and indicated he expected more bodies will be recovered.
