The tiny Greek island of Paxos provides a true haven of tranquillity for anyone wanting to take some time out of the rat-race and simply relax. With its serene olive groves, white-washed churches and deserted beaches, it offers the perfect opportunity to tap into the peace and beauty of an inspirational landscape and is the ultimate Greek island for a yoga holiday.

Paxos is a really beautiful island, most of which is covered in olive and cypress trees; it is one of the greenest islands in Greece, even in mid-summer. The island has for the most part escaped the effects of mass tourism and is still completely unspoilt: there are just three main villages, all of which have retained their traditional Greek charm; there are roads, but not too many cars; there is just one bus and five taxis. But the island has hardly changed in the last 20 years.

But what is it that makes Paxos so special and such a perfect destination for a yoga holiday? It’s the fantastic clear light on the silver olive trees and the crystal clear water. It’s the perfume of jasmine, honeysuckle and the myriad of other wonderfully bright flowers that are to be found across the island from early spring to late autumn. It’s the wonderful silence that is only interrupted by the occasional bird singing, the buzzing of cicadas or the chip, chip, chipping of a stone-mason. And it’s the chance to re-discover the simplicity of the old Greece with its village life revolving around churches and family-run tavernas, its network of century-old donkey steps, disused olive presses, ancient wells and cisterns, and abandoned old stone houses so patiently awaiting restoration.

Special interest holiday operator, Paxos Life Activities, is offering two Kundalini yoga holidays on the island in Summer 2010. The techniques of Kundalini yoga are profoundly transformational and work more rapidly than any other form of yoga. It is also more holistic than other forms of yoga and consists of several elements, all of which are brought into every session. It can be described as a technology for spiritual growth or self-help for the soul which gives you strength to change and to expand your capacity for life. It carries its own legacy of total integrity beyond the personality through its historical lineage and it brings out your innate inner radiance.

The holidays, which will be led by Barbara Lyndley, founder of SimplyB Yoga and a qualified member of the Kundalini Yoga Teachers’ Association, are suitable for everyone from beginners to the more experienced. They will be based around early morning and evening group yoga sessions, supplemented by walking meditations in the beautiful Paxos countryside. One-to-one tuition will be available at additional cost and there will also be plenty of time either to explore Paxos or simply relax.

Accommodation is in shared villas with their own pools and spacious terraces set in the shade and tranquillity of the olive groves above the village of Loggos, one of the three main villages on the island. It is however also possible for anyone who has their own accommodation or who wishes to be more independent to just join the group yoga sessions and walking meditations.

The ‘May Yoga Week’ takes place 24 – 31 May and the ‘Autumn Yoga Week’ 27 September – 4 October.

A range of Creative Writing, Self-Development, Painting and Photography holidays, and skippered and bareboat Yacht Charter are also available.
