A Palestinian attempting to fire Qassam rockets at southern Israel was killed in an Israel airstrike in northern Gaza early Friday, the army said.

The rocket launching pad and rockets were destroyed and cell members hit in the airstrike carried out jointly by the Israel Security Agency and air force, the army said.

Palestinian media reports claimed three other cell members were wounded. The dead terrorist belonged to Jaljalatt, a Salafist movement that operates in Gaza, the army said.

The army issued a warning to Hamas, saying it held the terrorist organization responsible for maintaining the calm in southern Israeli communities and would respond to any attempts to disrupt the quiet.

Since the beginning of the year, approximately 770 Qassam rockets, mortar shells and Grad missiles have been fired at southern Israel from Gaza, the army said.

Meanwhile, quoting Palestinian media reports, Maariv said Friday four Palestinians were wounded, one critically in a separate incident in northern Gaza. The newspaper said a group of four Palestinians spotted approaching the northern Gaza border fence with Israel, was injured by Israeli army artillery fire. Palestinian medics at the site said two of the Palestinians were seriously injured in the incident, the paper said.
