U.S. film director Tyler Perry said he will donate $1 million to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
The director of "Madea Goes to Jail" and "The Family That Preys" said he is making the donation to the oldest civil rights organization in the United States to honor those who helped in the civil rights movement, CNN reported Tuesday.
"I feel so honored and blessed to be in a position where I can give," Perry said. "Had it not been for the perseverance and vision of the thousands who came before me in the 100 years of this legendary organization, I would not be in the position I am in today."
NAACP Chairman Julian Bond applauded Perry for his charitable gift, which will be spread across the next four years, and his cinematic and TV efforts involving the African American population of the United States.
"Tyler is a courageous pioneer in bringing positive images of African American culture and struggles to the screen. His remarkable journey from poverty and childhood abuse to become one of the world's most successful filmmakers and entrepreneurs is an inspiration to us all," Bond said.
