A ceiling at a hospital on the British island of Guernsey collapsed under the pressure of torrential rains, a Health and Social Services spokesman said.
There were no reported injuries.
The unidentified spokesman said the ceiling collapse at Castel Hospital took place in the hospital's Meadows Day Care Center and immediately prompted concerns about patients possibly being exposed to asbestos, the Guernsey Press reported Saturday.
In the wake of Friday's ceiling collapse, a specialist contractor visited the 1970s building to determine the extent of the damage.
The spokesman said the building, which offers activities to nearly 20 dementia patients daily Monday through Friday, was closed down as a precaution.
"The collapse of the ceiling at the Meadows Day Center today serves to highlight that the facilities for mental health patients at the Castel Hospital are past their sell-by date and that there is an urgent need for new facilities to be built as soon as possible," the Health and Social Services official told the Guernsey Press.
The accident was not attributed to a lack of maintenance.
