A 5-foot alligator used in a show and tell in Panama City Beach, Fla., escaped after its school visit, a Florida Fish and Wildlife spokesman said.
Department spokesman Stan Kirkland told The (Panama City, Fla.) News Herald the alligator used in the Breakfast Point Academy show and tell Friday jumped from a truck and made its escape.
"Most people don't think they can jump, but they have an amazing ability to jump," Kirkland said of alligators. "They can not only jump, they can run."
While Panama City Beach officers and Bay County sheriff's deputies aided in the search for the reptile, Friday's search was fruitless.
Kirkland said the animal's mouth may still be taped shut, as it was during its school visit.
Meanwhile, the wildlife official told the News Herald that animal escapes are rare.
"It's probably happened. It's not something we hear about," he said. "This just happened to be viewed by half of Panama City Beach."
