A total of 54 people died Sunday in El Salvador as the Central American country was besieged by heavy rains, flooding and landslides, authorities said.

The Salvadoran newspaper, El Dairio de Hoy, said the highest casualty count took place in San Vicente, where 24 people were killed.

Homes in the San Vicente municipalities of Verapaz, and Tepetitan Tecoluca were crushed in an avalanche following ore than 12 hours of continuous rains.

Meanwhile, the Commandos Rescue relief group said 50 more people are missing in the areas of Ilopango, San Martín, San Jose Guayabal and San Vicente.

Directorate for Civil Protection authorities maintain the situation is serious in El Salvador as overflowing rivers have destroyed bridges and flooding has claimed homes and other structures.

El Dairio de Hoy said in response to the widespread rainfall and flooding, authorities asked Salvadoran residents to take appropriate precautions to avoid potential landslides.
