With the growth of Internet-use comes the growth on information sharing. Today, practically everything you need to know about everything under the sun can be found online. One of the tools that are changing the way people share information online today is Twitter. Twitter, the micro-blogging tool is now used by companies and individuals to share information with people online.

NASA is one of the companies who are taking advantage of the networking tool to share news to “followers”. NASA uses twitter to share general news to more than 38,000 followers.

Next month, when Mark Polanski, a NASA astronaut will be leading the Space Shuttle Endeavour on the STS-127 mission to the International Space Station and will be using Twitter to update thousands of people regarding the status of the mission. Polanski intends to update his twitter account throughout the whole mission and plans to take questions from followers. Aside from questions from Twitter users, Polanski will also be accepting questions posted on YouTube and linked to his twitter account.

Polanski will not be the first astronaut to tweet from space. Mike Massimo, another NASA astronaut plans on updating his twitter account when he goes on the STS-125 mission this month. Tweets are short messages (140 characters) or less that are uploaded on the micro-blogging site. Twitter allows people to follow each other’s accounts online which can be updated every second. This means that millions of pieces of information are exchanged daily on the networking site. The site, originally used by users to share mundane activities in their daily lives is now used as a potentially explosive marketing tool by Internet savvy individuals and companies.

Now, if an institution like NASA can take advantage of these emerging technologies to spark interest among the public regarding the things that they do, there is no reason that other companies can’t or shouldn’t do the same. Twitter is currently at the stage wherein people are just discovering its immense networking and marketing potential. If there is a good time to get on twitter, that time would be now. It will take some effort to build a following on the site.

Would you tweet yourself, get your virtual assistant to do it for you, or how would you manage your social networks?

This is cool. It would have been neat to include his username. In looking for him on Twitter I believe his name is spelled Mark Polansky (with a y) and for those interested his handle: Astro_127

Mark Massimo, the NASA astronaut currently on the space shuttle mission STS-125 is currently using twitter to provide updates from the mission to repair the Hubble telescope. His twitter handle is astro_Mark
