Students suspected of drinking alcohol at a Foxborough, Mass., high school will face breath analysis during the school day, officials said.
The Foxborough School Committee is expected to ratify the breath tests Oct. 19 as part of a new school safety plan, Principal Jeffrey Theodoss told the Boston Globe.
The town's schools had about 12 incidents of underage drinking last year, during and after school, Theodoss said. Chaperones and teachers spend too much time trying to figure out whether students had been drinking, he said.
"A breathalyzer just becomes a clean way of following through. And if we're wrong? We will apologize,'' Theodoss said.
A first offender will be removed from school or an event by a parent and will be suspended for five days. A second offense will bring a 10-day suspension, a hearing before the principal or an expulsion recommendation.
Students would not face legal action based on the breath tests, officials said.
