A notorious crime boss wounded in a July shooting in Moscow died Friday in a hospital in that city, the Russian prosecutor's office confirmed.

Vyacheslav Ivankov, known as Yaponchik ("Little Japanese"), had kept a low profile since he was acquitted in 2005 by the Russian Supreme Court of killing three Turkish citizens in a Moscow restaurant in 1992, RIA Novosti reported.

He was shot in the abdomen by snipers as he came out of a cafe in northern Moscow July 29, Itar-Tass said.

Ivankov was extradited from the United States to Russia in June 2004. He served almost 10 years in the Allenwood maximum-security prison in Pennsylvania for extorting $3.5 million from two Russian immigrants.
