Educational company Alelo Inc. announced the launch of its unique game-based cultural learning environment for personnel deploying to the Horn of Africa.

Alelo said it developed its Virtual Cultural Awareness Trainer as a game-based, online cultural learning environment to advance training for personnel preparing for tours in the 13 countries under U.S. Africa Command.

The company said VCAT is the first of its kind to use a game-based scenario that immerses players in a virtual world that mimics real-life locations in the Horn of Africa.

Players in VCAT practice cultural awareness skills in various interactions with African non-player characters in a variety of environments.

Alelo developed similar game-based training systems for U.S. and Australian soldiers preparing for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan.

U.S. Joint Forces Command has launched the cross-cultural learning product on its Joint Knowledge Online site.
