When Dr. Susan Hardwicke was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, her immediate reaction was to seize the reins. She fought a courageous fight, enduring chemotherapy and contributing to her recovery through education and the use of natural supplements to strengthen her own immune system. Today she maintains a breakneck work schedule as chief executive of Social Media Solutions LLC, a cutting-edge online PR company specializing in political reputation management and social networking. She also still finds time to encourage her fellow cancer warriors.
Nominated by Richmond businessman Art McKinney, Hardwicke is the honorary chair for the 21st annual American Cancer Society (ACS) Golf Championship. The event will be held Oct. 25, 2010 at the Hermitage Country Club. The tournament hopes to raise $150,000 for research, patient programs and services.
“It’s one of the premier golf tournaments in Richmond,” said Nadine Malpass, ACS Area Executive Director. “Susan joins a prestigious list of cancer survivors committed to their community and to raising much needed funds for the fight against cancer. She’s really taking it to the next level with her dynamic work and focus on survivor issues.”
A neuro-nutritionist, Hardwicke noted that with more people surviving cancer there is greater need to understand the psychological as well as physical effects of recovery.
“My whole mission is the recovery from treatment as well as the cancer itself,” Hardwicke said. “I want to help people emerge from seeing themselves as a victim to leading a productive life.”
