A hiking trip to Mount Olympus in Utah ended with a fall that left a 49-year-old woman dead and two teenage boys injured, police say.
Salt Lake County Sheriff's spokesman Don Hutson said Karin Vandenberg of Olympus Cove, Utah, died Saturday when she lost her footing and slid at least 1,000 feet down the mountain, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Vandenberg's 14-year-old son Cole and another 14-year-old, Clayton Holding, attempted to help the woman as she fell, forcing both teens to also fall down the slope.
Hutson said both teens were in fair condition at a hospital with head injuries and broken bones.
Holding's parents, Christine and Stephen, were also part of the hiking excursion.
Hutson told the Tribune the group was full of experienced hikers who had brought along all necessary equipment and supplies for the outing.
"The whole group is familiar with this area. This is something they've done many times before," he said.
